The choirs of Valley City State University will present the 19th annual Christmas at St. Catherine’s concert, held in the historic St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, Thursday, December 6, 2018.
The concert will begin at 7:30 pm. The church is at 540 3rd Avenue NE in Valley City. Admission to the concert is free, but donations to support the work of the choir will be accepted.
The VCSU Concert Choir (55 members) and University Singers (10 singers) will present a mix of traditional and contemporary holiday choral music. They will be joined on the concert by the VCSU Brass Ensemble, led by Dr. Ken Jimenez and Mr. Jerrold Heide. They will be performing arrangements of traditional carols and joining the choirs for the grand finale of “O Holy Night.”
The VCSU choirs include students majoring in music as well as non-music major students from disciplines across campus. The Concert Choir has performed across the upper mid-west and internationally, including performances in Mexico, England, Wales, Ireland, the Netherlands, Austria, and Czech Republic. In May 2019 the choir will undertake a performance tour to Italy.
The choirs are under the direction of Dr. Christopher Redfearn, who is in his seventh year as Director of Choral Activities at VCSU. “This is always one of my favorite concerts of the year,” explains Redfearn. “I’m excited to share the music of the season with our audience. In addition, the combination of voices and brass choir will be a very special treat.”
Many community members have made Christmas at St. Catherine’s a regular part of their holiday season, and the is public is invited to join the choirs for this evening of festive entertainment.
