Throwback Thursday: VC Pussyfoot League

The Valley City Times-Record plans to run a historical photograph each week submitted by our readers.

Former Valley City resident W. Wayne Willson, now a resident of Carson City, Nev., said the photo of the Coast To Coast Hardware store-sponsored Pussyfoot League team was taken in the early 1940s, in front of the store on Central Avenue.

On a recent visit to Valley City, Willson said in the photograph he is the shortest member of the team which won that year's championship in the Valley City Pussyfoot League.

He explained that the Pussyfoot League was a youth baseball organization similar to today's Little League.

Said Willson, "We had a good team that year – that's why we're holding the championship trophy."

Among team members shown are George Freadoff, the owner of Valley City-based Bayshore, Willson said.

Willson said while living in Valley City he worked for Montana Dakota Utilities and the National Guard, moved to Jamestown, and eventually to Nevada after transferring from the North Dakota National Guard to the Nevada National Guard.

Photos can be of people, events or places in Barnes County from 10, 20, 30 years ago, or even older. Please submit photographs by email to, or drop them by our office at 146 Third Street NE.
