Throwback Thursday: Leal School in 1961

Paul Riemerman

The Valley City Times-Record plans to run a historical photograph each week submitted by our readers.

Glenice Carlson provided this photograph of the lowering of the flag at the Leal School, taken by her mother, Ruth Alderman, in 1961.

Carlson said the photograph is of the last lowering of the U.S. flag at the school in 1961, which she found in memorabilia left by her mother, an avid photographer. After the flag was lowered, the Dazey, Leal and Rogers schools consolidated to form North Central of Barnes, the forerunner of the current Barnes County North School District. Carlson now lives in Horace, N.D.

Photos can be of people, events or places in Barnes County from 10, 20, 30 years ago, or even older. Please submit photographs by email to, or drop them by our office at 146 Third Street NE.
