Since 2012, the Barnes County Sheriff’s Department has been helping families and individuals who have had to deal with a major tragedy or loss by hosting their Secret Santa program. Coming into the 7th year, President of the group Don Fiebiger feels very rewarded for the work he has done creating it. Through this program, the department has helped around 20 families already this year.
"We've bought winter clothes for children, beds, just a lot of different things to help families out," Fiebiger said. "If someone has cancer or needs to make several trips for medical reasons, an unexpected death in the family, or even house fires, we help them out."
Fiebiger keeps records of the people the program has helped to make sure they are still getting what they need. He said that if some people are still in need, they can be helped by the program again. The families and individuals are kept confidential.
In continuing to help those in need, the department is seeking monetary donations from Valley City citizens to show support for their neighbors. If there is one thing many people can agree on about our community, it is that everyone helps each other out. With the holidays coming, these can be wonderful but also stressful times for the people we care about and everyone can make a big difference in someone else's life by donating.
"We get some very good help from businesses and individuals in Barnes County," Fiebiger said. "We always have some very great assistance."
There are still plenty of families to serve and we are only just coming up on the holidays. This means there are opportunities to help someone in need.
"We love helping people," Fiebiger said. "If you hear of someone in need, get a hold of us and we will look into it."
Donations can be dropped off at the Sheriff's Department on 575 10th St SW.
