The bone believed to be human that was found in Valley City earlier this month has been positively identified as that of a raccoon, said Valley City Police Chief Fred Thompson in a release.

Thompson said the bone, which was found on the side of Winter Show Road on April 12, was transported to the Grand Forks Medical Examiner's Office for examination. It was there that Dr. Walter Kemp identified the bone as belonging to a raccoon.

Thompson said the appropriate authorities in the investigation have been notified, and the case is closed.
