One retiree, the teacher of the year and the friend of education were all recognized at Valley City Public Schools Achievement and Excellence program on Wednesday, May 9 at the Hi-Liner Activity Center.

The school district holds the end-of-year social each May to recognize retirees and award winners.

VCPS recognized its 2018 Teacher of the Year — Nancy Ost at the program. Ost has taught first grade at Jefferson Elementary School for 19 years. She was first told about the honor at a surprise ceremony in front of the elementary students late last month.

Barb Gendreau, junior high Independent Learning Center coordinator, was the district’s only retiree this year. After 40 years in education and nine with the Valley City Public School District, Gendreau was honored in front of her peers with a poem written and read by junior high English teacher Kristi Shanenko.

The Valley City Education Association gave its 2018 Friend of Education award to John Schonert on Wednesday.
