The National Weather Service in Grand Forks predicts more severe weather in Barnes County including tornados in 2013 than in 2012.
Greg Gust, warning coordinating meteorologist for the Grand Forks office, said Thursday he expects a normal amount of severe weather including tornados this season, compared with a light year for severe weather last summer.

Organizers of Barnes County's 2013 Relay for Life will be selling ballon-carried floating lanterns to be released the night of the annual event set for Friday.
This year's relay will take place in downtown Valley City from 6 p.m. to midnight, said Betty Pedersen, one of the board members of the sponsoring organization. Pedersen said it has not yet been decided where the floating balloons will be released, but it will be someplace on Central Avenue.

Ejvin Mikkelsen, age 92, of Lisbon, ND, formerly of Sanborn and Valley City, ND, died Saturday, June 15th at the Lisbon Hospital, Lisbon, ND. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, June 19th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sanborn, ND. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM and one hour before the service on Wednesday all at the church in Sanborn, ND. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 PM Tuesday evening at the Church in Sanborn. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Sanborn, ND.
Marsha Offner, age 69, of Valley City, ND, died Thursday, June 13th at her residence surrounded by her family under Hospice of the Red River Valley care. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, June 19th at Epworth United Methodist Church in Valley City with Chaplain Ken Schock officiating. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Lerud Schuldt Funeral Home and one hour before the service on Wednesday at the church. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 PM Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Tamera Maley, 52, Ypsilanti, ND died Wednesday June 12, 2013 at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND.
Tamera Neumann was born November 8, 1960 at Neosho, MO, the daughter of Samuel Neumann and Betty (Rentfro) Neumann. She received her education at the Joplin area school. She attended College at Valley City for 2 years. She worked at the North Dakota State Hospital as a Behavioral helper.
She and Larry Maley were married September 16, 1996 at Ypsilanti, ND. They made their home in Ypsilanti where they resided.
A new group calling itself Friends of the Bandshell has organized in an attempt to raise an estimated $150,000 needed to repair and build a foundation for the bandshell in Valley City's City Park.
Becky Heise, a member of the group, said the group met Thursday in the Barnes County Historical Society Museum to talk about what was needed and “to divvy up some tasks” on what will be needed.
Heise said the bandshell is currently on top of a collapsing basement damaged by floods in 2009 and 2011.

Rally in the Valley community days weekend will have no shortage of wheels. A car show and vehicle events are set for Saturday, and a hill climb is planned for Sunday.
The Valley City Cruisers will hold its 15th annual car show Saturday at Rally in the Valley.
According to club president Terry Johnson, the group expects to attract about 120 cars, motorcycles, tractors and more at Central Avenue and Main Street for the event.
The Dakota Riders Motorcycle Club will hold its 35th annual Father's Day hill climb in Valley City Sunday as part of Rally in the Valley.
Ron Tolstad, left, and Tom Nix, Korean War veterans and members of Valley City's Veterans of Foreign Wars club, are the reason Main Street is lined with American flags this summer. The two hung flags on light posts down the street for Memorial Day, and they will keep them up until Labor Day.
Nix said, "I think they should be put up to remind everybody this is America and we're not ashamed of them."
The Barnes County Sheriff's Department has two new vehicles, this AWD Taurus and a four-wheel-drive Tahoe, which will remain unmarked, replaced older vehicles in the fleet. The new vehicles have the advantage of being able to go through snow, the Tahoe allows extra storage space for necessary equipment.
